The Formula Behind It
The 3-dart average is calculated like this:
Average = (Points Scored ÷ Number of Darts) × 3
An example: if you win a complete 501 leg using exactly 30 darts, your average is (501 ÷ 30) × 3 = 50.1.
An important rule for counting darts: if you bust in a visit, or if you check out on the first or second dart of a visit, the visit still counts as a full 3 darts thrown – except for the visit in which the leg is actually finished: there, only the darts actually thrown up to the finish count, and any darts that would have followed don't.
Where Do You Stand?
The ranges below are a rough guide, compiled from several independent darts community sources – not an official, exact classification, since skill levels vary a lot by league and region.
For comparison: Michael van Gerwen holds the record for the highest average in a televised match at 123.40. Most mid-table PDC Tour professionals sit between 95 and 100.
Two Things That Affect Your Average
Match vs. practice average: under tournament pressure, most players' average drops 5 to 15 points below what they hit in relaxed practice – that's normal and nothing to worry about, simply the effect of nerves and the need to actually check out on a double at the end.
First-9 average: because the final visit of a leg is often aimed deliberately at a specific double rather than the highest score, many players also track the "first 9" average – the same calculator above, just using the score and darts from the first three visits (9 darts) instead of the whole leg. This shows pure scoring power, independent of the finish.
